Educational Testing Service Research Scientist, Language Learning, Teaching, and Assessment (Open Rank) in Princeton, New Jersey
The Language Learning, Teaching, and Assessment Lab (LLTA) has an opening for a Research Scientist. The LLTA Lab, one of three inaugural AI Research Laboratories at ETS, is made up of a team of research scientists, learning scientists, engineers, user research specialists, data scientists and product owners. The LLTA Lab prototypes capabilities and product concepts that enable interconnected language learning and assessment systems and interactive educator training programs. The Lab also prototypes capabilities to increase language learning and assessment development efficiencies through automation.
The Research Scientist will support the development of prototypes and product concepts to support the ecosystem of language learning solutions including self-guided solutions, curriculum guided solutions, and learning progression solutions. Capabilities to enable solutions include progressive personal profiles to inform alerts, nudges, and interventions; personalized diagnostics, assessments and dashboards; online and in-class interventions; and personalized and adaptive pathways.
This position is particularly oriented towards an individual with expertise and experience in second language teaching, teacher development, language learning instructional design, curriculum and materials development, technology-mediated language teaching and learning, and language assessment.
Conduct research on best practices in language teaching, materials design, technology-mediated language learning, and language teacher development.
Collaborate with teams in Research, Assessment Development, Statistical Analysis, and New Product Development to design, prototype, and evaluate instructional and assessment materials that meet the needs of international English language learners, teachers, and systems of education.
Interact with international clients to determine their needs, design solutions, and deliver effective products and services.
Evaluate products and services related to English language education in the global market.
Advise on best practices and identify opportunities for innovation in international English language education.
BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Apply language learning research to prototypes and product concepts developed in the Language Learning Teaching and Assessment Lab.
Engage with users of target market and user segments to conduct visioning activities, needs assessments, validation of problem statements, and ongoing testing through the development lifecycle.
Develop assessment-for-learning models and support the application of these models to the development of prototypes and product concepts.
Work with learning scientists, engineers, software developers, and product owners in agile teams to support the efficient and effective development of product concepts and prototypes.
Conduct applied research on the intersection between best practice pedagogical principles and the practical needs of educators and learners to connect theory and practice and apply this research to the development of technology-enhanced solutions.
Communicate findings from research and development efforts with broad audiences.
A Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Applied Linguistics, Language Education (TESOL), Second Language Acquisition, Educational Technology, or similar is required.
Three years of progressively independent research and/or development experience required. Candidates with less or more experience will be considered for the appropriate level position.
We are particularly interested in scientists with expertise in second language acquisition research applied to English language curriculum and materials development and evaluation, language teacher development, instructional design, pedagogic and assessment task design, technology-mediated language learning/teaching, and language test design.
We are interested in candidates with expertise/experience in research on young language learners (K-6) and/or adolescent/adult language learners.
Experience teaching English foreign language learners.
Experience developing language teaching and learning materials.
Experience training language teachers.
Experience interacting with clients or researchers/developers outside of the U.S.
Experience managing teams of researchers and developers.
Experience with qualitative and quantitative research methods.
Evidence of attention to detail and ability to maintain complex schedules in a timely manner.
